Class-wide Ancient Civilizations Competition

  • As a classroom management tool, I divide the class into groups of 3-5, and they create their own civilizations.

  • Students use our method of studying civilizations (GRAPES) to create their civilizations.

  • Throughout the semester, their civilizations can earn points for following expectations and going above and beyond.

Ancient Egypt: Mummy X & Mummification

  • Students analyzed text and clues to make inferences and solve the mystery of "Who was Mummy X?"

  • We collaborated with science to do a cross-curricular lab on mummification.

  • Students studied informational websites and watched videos to learn about the process of mummification.

  • Students led teachers in the step-by-step process while we mummified stuffed animals.

Ancient India: Caste System Sort

  • Students analyzed text detailing the origins and organization of the caste system.

  • Students worked in pairs to create life-size bodies and sort the castes according to the body parts of their origin.

Ancient Greece: Greek Olympics

  • Planned and organized a grade level event to celebrate the culmination of our ancient Greece unit.

  • Students competed in houses in intellection, theater and physical competitions.

Ancient Greece: Choice Project (see below)

  • Students completed research on a topic of choice.

  • They created models and presentations in a format of their choosing to teach students about their topic.

  • At the end of the project, we did a gallery walk to learn and inquire about each others projects.

Ancient Rome

  • Students researched Roman roads and aqueducts.

  • After, students built aqueducts to compete in the longest, fastest, and slowest categories.

The Middle Ages

  • After reading an introduction to the Middle Ages at the end of the year, students constructed castles to showcases working protection features, such as drawbridges and motes.
